It was a case of déjà vu all over again for the Apache Ladies volleyball team that defeated Wharton County Junior College 3-0 (25-23, 25-12, 25-14) on Thursday in the first round of the Region XIV Championship Tournament at Lee College in Baytown.
The win marked the fourth time this season Tyler Junior College has defeated the Lady Pioneers.
The Apache Ladies (ranked No. 5 nationally) now advance to play Blinn College (No. 9) at 2 p.m. Friday. Blinn defeated Paris Junior College to advance.
The tournament has a double-elimination format with the top two finishers advancing to the NJCAA National Tournament.
During Thursday’s game, middle blocker Jacqueline Santos led the Apache Ladies with 12 kills, 11 digs, and five blocks. Teammate Lindsey Jones had 10 kills, eight digs, and one block.
Other standouts were Adrienn Amaro (3 blocks, 8 digs, 39 assists), Ivana Bulajic (2 blocks, 9 kills, ace serve), Jordan McArdle (block, 6 kills) and Samatha Llamas (5 blocks, 6 kills).
