UT Tyler soccer falls at conference tourney


LINTON, Miss. β€” The UT Tyler men’s soccer season came to an end on Thursday after a 1-0 loss to Schreiner in the first round of the American Southwest Conference Tournament at Robert P. Longabaugh Field.

The Patriots, the No. 3 seed, finishes the season with an 11-6-1 overall record. UT Tyler had won the last two and three of the last four ASC titles.

For the majority of the match, UT Tyler and Schreiner, the No. 6 seed, struggled to find any offense, until the 87th minute when Mountaineers senior Gio Benitez scored the only goal of the match on a penalty kick.

The Patriots were unable to find the back of the net, even though they outshot Schreiner 18-11 and had a six-to-one advantage in corner kicks.

Senior Chris Powell, in his final game with UT Tyler, led the way with three shots, all of which were on-goal, while junior Elijah Shipman added eight shots with two on-goal.

Schreiner (8-9) advances to meet No. 2 UT Dallas (11-5) at 2 p.m. today.

In the other game on Thursday, No. 5 Hardin-Simmons defeated No. 4 Mary Hardin-Baylor, 2-1.
