UT Tyler women clinch playoff berth


LONGVIEW — UT Tyler won its fifth straight game, overpowering LeTourneau, 72-44, on Thursday at Solheim Arena to clinch a playoff berth in the American Southwest Confernence women’s basketball tournament.

The Patriots, under first-year coach Kevin Baker, are in the postseason for the first time since 2009.

UT Tyler (16-7, 11-6 ASC) used a 26-10 run in the first half, highlighted by a couple of 3-pointers by Taylor Murphy and Teylor Seals, vaulting the Patriots into the lead.

After taking a commanding 36-14 lead into the locker room at the half, UT Tyler continued to pressure the Ladyjackets (7-15, 4-12) in the second half, going up by as many as 31 points.

Murphy led the Patriots with 16 points. Murphy also had four steals. Teammate Olivia Burns scored 13 on the night, while She’Cara Humphrey added 12. Danai Woods contributed 10 assists and Brittany King was near a double double with nine points and 10 rebounds.

Kaley Green led the LadyJackets with 11 points.
