HOUSTON — Following a long road trip, Tyler Junior College took some time to get moving. But once the Apache Ladies did, they were hard to stop.
Shernise Robinson exploded for 29 second-half points to finish the night with a game-high 31, leading TJC past San Jacinto 92-76 in Region XIV women’s basketball Wednesday night.
The 16-point victory capped a game in which the Apache Ladies trailed 37-30 at the break, plus it improved coach Trenia Jones’ all-time record against Jacinto to 27-0.
“I thought it was like we were playing in mud,” Jones said of the opening half. “We just kind of picked up the tempo in the second half. We did a lot of fouling in the first half and we had a lot of people in foul trouble.”
With the win, TJC improved to 10-11 on the season and 3-5 in conference heading into Saturday’s game versus Jacksonville at Wagstaff Gymnasium. Meanwhile, San Jacinto fell to 6-20 overall and 1-7 in conference and plays host to conference-leader Trinity Valley on Saturday.
The Apache Ladies turned things around at the break.
“We just told them they were playing soft and they were playing sluggish,” Jones said. “San Jacinto only had eight players and we were playing down to their level.”
Robinson set the tone with her second-half performance, but Apache Ladies stepped up their play as well. Adrienne Phillips followed with a 20-point effort, while Carolina Lopez contributed 12 points and Bria Emanuel added 10.
San Jacinto was paced by Julia Jackson (18 points), Joyneshia Darby (12 points) and Kendricka Osborne (11 points).
“Shernice just stepped it up in the second half,” Jones said. “The kid can flat out score. She was timid in the first half.”
