HS Soccer Roundup, Jan. 15: Blackburn scores 4 for Whitehouse

WHITEHOUSE — Behind four goals from Travis Blackburn, Whitehouse routed Henderson 5-2 on Tuesday to move to 2-0 on the year.

Destin Wilkins scored the other goal for the Wildcats, who return to action Thursday in the Wildcat Classic in Palestine.

Lady Lions take fourth at MP Tourney

MOUNT PLEASANT — The John Tyler girls soccer team won two and lost two at the Mount Pleasant Lady Tigers Invitational Soccer Tournament over the weekend, finishing in fourth place.

The Lady Lions started off with a 2-1 win over Greenville, with Jolenne Calleja scoring both goals in the first half, both off assists from Esperanza Zavaleta.

JT followed that with a 3-0 win over Pleasant Grove. Adriana Perez scored first off a Zavaleta assists. Rebecca Ontiveros then stole the ball and midfield and dribbled all the way to the box to score the second goal. Zavaleta added the third on a shot from outside the box.

Rebecca Renteria kept the clean sheet in goal as the Lady Lions clinched first in their pool.

However, JT lost the next game to Longview 2-0, with the Lady Lobos scoring twice late in the game. Longview went on to win the tournament.

The Lady Lions lost their final match 1-0 to host Mount Pleasant,

Sub-varsity teams also played for JT. Junior varsity lost to Texas High 3-0, beat Greenville 1-0 (goal from Michelle Garcia) and lost to Mount Pleasant 5-2 (Lorena Vargas and Jessica Razo goals). The freshmen team tied Hallsville 0-0, lost to Lindale JV1 2-1 (Yulissa Villegas goal) and tied Lindale JV2 1-1 (Blanca Razo goal).

The Lady Lions varsity squad returns to action in the Lufkin Showcase Thursday-Saturday.
