KILGORE — Robert E. Lee moved to 2-0 with a 4-1 over Athens Friday on Day 2 of the Michael Merritt Memorial Showcase at R.E. St. John Stadium.

REL senior Lumi Kaba scored two goals with the others coming from Uriel Chavez and Jorge Martinez. The assists were from Zeldon Quinsey, Mikey Wilkins, Case Carnes and Isaias Robles.

The Red Raiders led 2-0 at halftime but were forced to play the majority of the second half with 10 men after Quinsey grabbed two quick yellow cards. He will now also miss today’s finale against Marshall at 10:30 a.m. at R.E. St. John Stadium.

“This did give us some experience of having to play with some adversity, being down a man,” said Lee coach Marty Germany. “The guys responded well to that.”

Junior Henry Plancarte’s goal was breached once by Athens, but that was all as he secured his second win in net.

Lady Raiders split 2 games

FORT WORTH — The Lady Raiders split their games Friday at the Red Bull Nolan Prep Showcase. Lee (1-2) began the day with a 2-1 loss to Nolan Catholic before rebounding to grab its first win of the season, a 2-1 victory over Lubbock Monterey.

Lee fell behind 1-0 in both games. Against Nolan Catholic, the Lady Raiders tied things up in the first half on a free kick goal by Libby George.

Nolan went back in front just before halftime and neither could add to that scoreline in the second half.

“They were better than us, so that wasn’t a bad result,” said Lee coach Chris Woodard about the loss to Nolan Catholic. “We are young and we at least showed them we could come and make a game of it after we got down.”

Against Monterey, it was REL that scored just before halftime to tie up their game at 1-1 thanks to a header from Mallory Curtis off a corner by Adai Urieta. Senior Brooke Johnston then got the match winner in the second half when a pass from Betsy Arellano put her one-on-one with the Monterey keeper and last year’s leading scorer did not miss.

The Lady Raiders close out play today with a matchup against Fort Worth Hockaday at 8 a.m.
