MESQUITE — Robert E. Lee turned the ball over four consecutive times to begin the fourth quarter, which allowed Mesquite to turn a tied game into an eight-point lead in a 55-48 Skeeters victory Wednesday.

The Red Raiders were never able to get back to within five points, ending a game in which senior Taylor Tankersley finished with a double-double that included 20 points. Mesquite’s Alex Cooper produced a game-high 34 points.

“It stayed at five to eight points the remainder of the game,” Lee coach Alan Johnston said. “Alex Cooper had a great offensive game. Taylor Tanskersley was the best player on the court when it came to scoring and rebounding.”

Lee fell to 14-6 on the season and 1-1 in District 12-5A, marks the Red Raiders will carry into Saturday’s home matchup against Longview (3:30 p.m. varsity start). Mesquite improved to 13-8 and 2-0.

“We just didn’t protect the ball on offense,” Johnston said. “We had some very costly turnovers late in the ball game, but the kids played extremely hard. It’s tough to see a group of guys play that hard and come up short. We have to leave it behind and get ready for those Lobos on Saturday.”
