HS Basketball Roundup, Dec. 9: Lee wins Lufkin Hoop Fest
LUFKIN β A week after being denied a tournament trophy because of a last-second shot, Robert E. Lee was forced to watch another one.
This one missed.
The Red Raiders (10-2) overcame a 10-point second period deficit to rally back and defeat Beaumont Central 38-37 in the final of the Lufkin Holiday Hoopfest Saturday.
Lee trailed Central 37-36 with 26 seconds remaining when Jack Calhoun stole the ball from Central. Calhounβs layup attempt was blocked, but it gave REL possession. Taylor Tankersley passed out of a double team to wide-open Justin DeSalvo who, on his 18th birthday, delivered the game-winning basket.
DeSalvo made it 38-37, but Central still had a chance to get in position for a buzzer beater, but it missed with Tankersley grabbing the rebound.
βIt took a team effort, there is no doubt about that,β Lee coach Alan Johnston said. βThey tried to negate Tankersley with a box-and-one, but other guys stepped up and made some perimeter shots.
βThe boys just made the plays. We took seven charges in this game. Little things like that and Calhounβs steal was the difference.β
The Red Raiders return home to face Nacogdoches at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Varsity Gymnasium.
