Playoff Roundup: El Campo rallies to deny Carthage

BEAUMONT — El Campo capitalized on a Carthage fumble and scored 15 unanswered points in the final four minutes to stun the Bulldogs 29-25 and clinch a bid in the Class 3A Division I state title game on Friday at Provost Umphrey Stadium.

Bryce Brandl led El Campo with 187 yards rushing on 24 carries, also completing four passes for 41 yards.

Carthage punted with 7:10 left and an 11-point lead, but a 15-play scoring drive by the Ricebirds (14-0) cut their deficit to three with 3:27 to play. The Bulldogs then fumbled the snap on the second play of the ensuing drive, which the Ricebirds recovered at the Carthage 9. On fourth down, Brandl punched it in from 2 yards out with 1:57 to play.

Blake Bogenschutz threw for 206 yards and rushed for 35 for Carthage (11-3).

Mart QB Thomas leads team over Alto, in 1A Semifinals 62-42

ATHENS — Mart quarterback De’Narian Thomas rushed for 306 yards and scored seven touchdowns to lead the Panthers to a 62-42 win over Alto on Friday in a Class 1A Division I state semifinal playoff game at Bruce Field in Athens.

Mart (11-2) advances to meet Shiner (12-1) in the state semifinals next week. Alto ended its season at 11-3.

Thomas had 15 carries in getting his totals. Mart running back D’Marcus Cosby added on another 102 yards in 13 tries to lead the Bulldogs into the state semifinals.

The Mart crew took to lighting up the scoreboard early on as they scored twice on three plays.

On the second play of the game, Quentin Bryant raced in from 66 yards away and the first of Bryson Nail’s kick conversions gave Mart a 7-0 lead.

Alto answered back on an eight-play drive, capped off by the first Jacolby Whitaker score from 3 yards out.

Whitaker had another outstanding game for the Yellowjackets, rushing for 256 yards and scoring five touchdowns on 32 carries. Quarterback Zac Sturns scored once and gained 86 yards on 22 carries.

Sturns hooked up with receiver Tyarius Hackett three times for 27 of his 66 passing yards.

Tenaha beats Frost 34-30 in Class 1A Quarterfinals

VAN — Chavis Gregory rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Tenaha Tigers to a 34-30 win over Frost in a Class 1A Division II state quarterfinal playoff game at Van Memorial Stadium on Friday.

Gregory had 17 carries and also threw for a TD.

Tenaha advances to meet Munday next week in the state semifinals.

The Tigers, trailing 30-26, took the lead with 5:18 left when Gregory scored on a 17-yard run. He then tossed a pass to TJ Thomas for the two-point conversion and a 34-30 advantage.

The Tigers had led 26-8 in the second quarter before the Polar Bears came back. Danial Steels scored three straight touchdowns — a 91-yard kickoff return, a 1-yard run and a 2-yard run. After two of those scores, he added two-point conversion runs. Steels led Frost with 82 yards on 22 carries.
