For the second time in three years, the UT Tyler men’s cross country team has been honored with the American Southwest Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Team Sportsmanship Award for the fall season.
The award, in its sixth academic year, honors the member institution in each ASC championship sport that best displays positive qualities of sportsmanship and fair play from its student-athletes, coaches and fans throughout the season. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committees from the conference’s 14 member institutions vote on the recipients.
Not only were the Patriots good sports, but they also won their seventh ASC championship, along with individual honors — conference champion Nick Huff, the ASC Newcomer of the Year Jason Hamilton and ASC Coach of the Year Bob Hepler.
Huff is a junior from Holly Lake Ranch and a graduate of Harmony High School, while Hamilton is a junior from Dallardsville.
CANNON EARNS HONOR
UT Tyler’s Jordan Cannon has been named the American Southwest Conference East Division Basketball Player of the Week. Cannon helped the Patriots start the season 2-0 for the first time since the 2009-10 season.
Cannon, a junior from Las Vegas had 19 points, nine rebounds and four assists to help fuel a conference-opening 79-60 road win over Howard Payne on Nov. 24. Cannon, who added a block and committed only one turnover in 29 minutes, was 5 of 8 shooting from 3-point range. His point and rebound totals were both game-highs.
The 5-11 guard is a transfer from Feather River College in Quincy, Calif. In two games, he is averaging 16.0 points. He had 13 points in the Patriots’ 119-98 opening win over Paul Quinn College on Nov. 17.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
The Patriot basketball teams continue their road trip today as both the men’s and women’s squads travel to Kerrville for a conference doubleheader with Schreiner. The women play at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men at 7:30 p.m.
The UT Tyler men are 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in league play, while the Patriot women are 1-2 (0-1). The Schreiner men are 2-1, while the women are 3-2. Neither has played a conference game.
After Thursday’s games, the Patriots slide over to Seguin to meet Texas Lutheran on Saturday. The women play at 1 p.m., followed by the men at 3 p.m.
The men also have a road game Monday against McNeese State in Lake Charles, La. Tipoff is 6:30 p.m.
The squads return home Dec. 6, facing Jarvis Christian College in a doubleheader. The women play at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men at 7:30 p.m.
