KILGORE — Tyler Junior College basketball coach Mike Marquis always preaches team first.

But on Saturday, there was an individual moment as Marquis registered his 500th career win in the Apaches’ 90-54 win over Houston Community College-Northwest in the Kurt Looby Classic at Masters Gymnasium.

“… been fortunate to coach a lot of good teams and a lot of good players,” Marquis said. “Obviously, when those things happen there is an individual focus, but it is really about lots and lots of kids I’ve had the privilege to coach at this level. It is a prideful thing, especially for myself and my family to get that number.”

Marquis, 48, has a career record of 500-247, including a mark of 205-131 as he is in his 12th season in Tyler. He previously coached at Indian Hills Community College and Marshalltown Community College. Both of those schools are in Iowa.

In the milestone win, all Tyler players scored and also grabbed at least one rebound. Ta’Jon Welcome led the way with 16 points, while DeAndre Harris added 11.

Daniel Edozie dominated the boards, clearing 12 rebounds for the 8-2 Apaches. Winslo Barry had nine boards and Trevor Berkeley added seven.

“I thought we were really good in the second half offensively,” Marquis said. “That was fun to watch. When we share the ball we are a good team.”

Ageez Shidi led HCC (4-5) with 17 points. Teammate Onyedikachi Okezie had 10 rebounds.

Tyler gets back into action next Saturday against Angelina College in Lufkin. Tipoff is 6 p.m.

The next home game is Dec. 5 against Jacksonville College (7 p.m. start).
