Area College Basketball Roundup: Patriots dominate HPU

BROWNWOOD — The UT Tyler men’s basketball team moved to 2-0 on the young season with an impressive 79-60 win over American Southwest Conference opponent Howard Payne on Saturday.

Jordan Cannon scored 19 points to go with nine rebounds in the win.

The game was a back-and-forth affair for the first eight minutes, with Howard Payne’s Jakalan Gayden tying the score at 13-13 with his jumper at the 12:04 mark in the first half.

After the Gayden bucket, UT Tyler (2-0, 1-0) went on a dominating 31-6 run over the next nine minutes, bringing the score to 44-19 with just three minutes left to play in the first half.

HPU was unable to recover, trailing 50-25 at the end of the first half.

It was much of the same in the second half, with the Patriots going up by as much as 39 points when Cannon hit a jumper with 8:15 left in the game, giving UT Tyler the 75-36 lead.

Cannon hit five 3-pointers and shot 70 percent from the field while teammate Darren Houliston added 12 points.

The Patriots outrebounded the Yellow Jackets 38-25.

Gayden led Howard Payne with 14 points while Brandon Gould added 13.

UT Tyler will now have a few days off before taking on ASC opponent Schreiner on Thursday in Kerrville. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m.

Patriot women fall to HPU

BROWNWOOD — The UT Tyler women’s basketball team fell 68-56 against Howard Payne in the Patriots’ American Southwest Conference opener.

Junior She’Cara Humphrey scored 19 points and tallied eight rebounds in the loss to the Yellow Jackets.

Howard Payne (3-0, 1-0) got off to a hot start in the game, going up 11-2 in the first four minutes after Tresta Donahoo hit a pair of free throws.

With just under eight minutes to play in the first half, the Patriots (1-2, 0-1) cut the Yellowjackets lead to 20-18 after a three-point play by Humphrey.

HPU would then go on an 18-4 run, capped off by a Dana Marrs 3-pointer, making the score 38-22 with just 40 seconds left in the first half.

Teylor Seals cut the HPU lead to just seven points with 2:41 remaining, but that would be as close as the Patriots would get.

Brean McMillan scored eight points for the Patriots, while Taylor Murphy added seven points.

Seals had six rebounds and four assists.

UT Tyler will now have a few days off before heading to Kerrville to take on Schreiner at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Texas College finishes unbeaten in Sundrop HBCU Classic

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Texas College earned an 89-80 win over Concordia-Selma (Ala.) on Saturday to finish unbeaten in the Sundrop HBCU Classic.

The Steers wrapped up the event for historically black colleges and universities with a 2-0 record after defeating Harris-Stowe State (Mo.) 71-62 on Friday.

Wiley College defeated Southern University-New Orleans 71-66 on Friday and lost to Xavier (La.) 76-61 on Saturday in the HBCU Classic.

The Steers (4-1) travel to Tougaloo (Miss.) on Monday for a doubleheader alongside the Lady Steers (1-4), who are coming off a split in the Xavier Classic. The Lady Steers won their first game of the season with a 71-63 win over Dillard (La.) on Thursday. The TC women suffered an 84-39 loss to host Xavier.

The Steers beat Tougaloo the first meeting 89-83 in overtime in Tyler, with the Lady Steers falling 73-59.

The TC teams open Red River Athletic Conference play at home on Thursday against LSU-Shreveport.
