NEW CHAPEL HILL — Mount Enterprise running back Hunter Ammons had a night to remember.
Ammons burned the Maud defense for 331 yards on 35 carries and scored a whopping 6 TDs to lead the Wildcats past the Cardinals 46-28 in a Class 1A Division II area playoff at Bulldog Stadium on Friday.
In the first half neither team’s defense put up much resistance as both teams traded score in the first half. The two teams combined for 435 yards of total offense during the half, with Maud having 222 and Mount Enterprise with 213 yards.
Mount Enterprise held on to a slim 28-22 lead at halftime and in the second half the Wildcats outscored Maud 18-6 and their defense stiffened and forced three turnovers to keep the Cardinals off track.
The Wildcats opened the third quarter with a six-play, 66-yard drive that was capped off by Ammons’ 24-yard TD on third-and-5 at the Cardinals 24 to put them up 34-22 with 9:11 left in the period. Ammons piled on two more scores from, 53 yards and 5 yards, to put Mount Enterprise well ahead of Maud 46-22 with 3:19 left in the fourth quarter.
Maud’s final score came with 34 seconds left in the game as quarterback Jared Miller scored on a 1-yard run. Miller fought hard all night and led the Cardinals with 267 yards on 26 carries with three TDs.
