Patriot eye return to postseason

After missing the postseason for the third straight year, the UT Tyler Patriots are hoping for a little playoff action this season.

The Patriot women’s basketball team gets their home schedule under way Tuesday as they play host to Austin College. Tipoff is 7 p.m. at the Herrington Patriot Center on the campus of The University of Texas at Tyler.

UT Tyler is starting a new era as Kevin Baker takes over the program as head coach.

The Lufkin native comes to UT Tyler after serving for five years as the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at NCAA Division II Lone Star Conference power West Texas A&M.

In his five seasons in Canyon, Baker helped lead the Lady Buffs to a 120-36 record and three LSC championships. The team has been ranked in the top 10 nationally for the past five seasons, and has made four trips to the NCAA tournament, including a run to the Elite Eight in 2008-09.

The Patriots opened their season on the road on Friday against LSU-Shreveport in Shreveport, La.

The Pilots won 71-53.

Teylor Seals, a 5-5 guard from Houston, led the way for the Patriots, scoring 20 points in her UT Tyler debut. She is a transfer from Blinn College.

The Patriots, who begin American Southwest Conference play on Saturday in Brownwood against Howard Payne, are picked to finish fourth in the ASC East Division this season. The top four teams advance to the playoffs.

The poll is voted on by the conference’s sports information directors, coaches and media members.

The Patriots finished last season 12-13 overall and 8-12 in the ASC.

This year, Baker brings a new attitude and new look to the women's squad, who have four returning players who have all played key minutes for the Patriots in previous seasons, including junior She’Cara Humphrey, a 6-0 post from Pittsburg, and senior Afritina Anderson, a 5-10 forward from Ennis.

Other returners include Olivia Burns, a 5-7 senior guard from San Antonio and Lauren Glasco, a 5-11 senior post from Spring.

Following today’s home opener and the ASC opner at Howard Payne on Saturday, the Patriots don’t return home until Dec. 6 when they play the first game of a doubleheader with the men against Jarvis Christian College.

UT Tyler’s first conference home game is Dec. 8 against Hardin-Simmons.
