Surge to Finish: Lee takes care of Lufkin

Christian Boone answered the call to spark Robert E. Lee past Lufkin, 55-45, Saturday at Lee Varsity Gymnasium.

Boone scored all of his eight points in a three-minute span at the end of the third and beginning of the fourth. It sparked Lee on a 13-2 run, which erased a five-point deficit and set the Red Raiders up for a comfortable win.

“Really I just tried to go out there and helped the team; run the plays and be in the right spot,” said Boone, who drained two treys during the surge.

“It just happened to all work out for us in a good way.”

Senior Taylor Tankersley paced the Red Raiders (2-0) with 18 points, seven rebounds and four steals while Caleb Johnston had seven points and 10 rebounds.

Lufkin (1-1) was led in the loss by 16 from Martin Williams and 10 from Cedvion Harris.

The Red Raiders went 13 of 25 from free-throw line while also committing 17 turnovers.

“I was real pleased with the kids for overcoming a terrible free-throw shooting night,” Lee coach Alan Johnston said. “We pulled down rebounds when we needed and we valued possession of the ball.”

Lee began the second half with a one-point lead, but pushed it to 26-21 on a dunk by Taylor Tankersley. The senior was fouled on the play and got up in a Lufkin defender’s face afterward, which led to a technical foul.

Tankersley missed the ensuing free throw and went to the bench. Meanwhile, Lufkin used the two free throws and possession to score five unanswered points and tie the game, 26-26.

Darriun Smallwood put Lee back in front, but then REL went ice cold for the next three minutes while Lufkin used 7-0 surge to lead 33-28.

Boone missed the only shot he attempted in the first half, but the senior came alive when REL needed him most. Boone drained a 3-pointer and then scored on a fastbreak layup to make it 35-33 entering the fourth.

Tankersley was back on the floor to start the fourth and he and Boone both delivered from long range, followed by a fastbreak layup from Caleb Johnston to give Lee a 41-35 lead with 5:57 left.

“That all came off back-to-back steals,” Johnston said. “(Boone) is a very gifted offensive player and he’s going to get a lot better defensively once he learns our defensive schemes.

“We didn’t give up any second shots and we also took a charge during that (run).”

Lufkin stemmed the tide a little to make it 41-39, but REL answered with a 9-0 run. Caleb Johnston had a turnaround jumper in the lane, Tankersley scored an easy basket off an in-bounds play and Jack Calhoun drained Lee’s sixth 3-pointer of the game.

Calhoun’s shot gave Lee a 50-39 lead with 2:41 remaining and REL ran out the clock after that.

The Red Raiders began the game shooting lights out from beyond the arc with Tankersley and Tucker Boyd giving REL a 10-5 lead.

Lufkin outscored Lee 10-3 the rest of the period for a 15-13 lead.

REL trailed 19-15, but was able to score seven of the next nine points to lead 22-21 at halftime.
