ET Roundup: Troups falls to Elysian Fields in double OT

LUFKIN — No strangers to each other with several multi-sport players, Troup ended East Chambers’ 2011-12 basketball season with a buzzer-beater in the area round.

On Thursday night, there was no buzzer-beater — but it took two overtime periods before East Chambers outlasted the Tigers, 24-17, in a Class 2A Division I bi-district playoff at Abe Martin Stadium.

East Chambers kicker Victor Lopez hit a 20-yard field goal at the 4:50 mark of the fourth quarter to tie the game, 17-17.

An exchange of an East Chambers fumble, followed by a Troup interception, set the Bucs up with a final shot as the clock wound down deep in Tiger territory.

An’Fernee Ross, however, made the third Tiger interception of the night to thwart the possible game-winning drive and force overtime.

Troup’s first possession of extra frames was picked off by Coby Collins to seemingly put the win in the Bucs’ hands.

However, a big sack by Troup’s Wesley Thompson pushed the Bucs into a 41-yard field goal attempt that fell short to force the second extra period.

The Bucs took their first lead on the second play of the second OT as quarterback, Johnson hit tight end, Nick King for a 25-yard scoring strike, and the extra point made it 24-17.

The Tigers’ final play came down to a fourth-and-1 scenario. Michael Davis got the call and bulled ahead for what appeared to be enough for a first down, but ended up being short.

The Bucs improved their season mark to 9-2 and move on to play Franklin in the area round. Troup ends the year at 9-2.

Overton 34, Wortham 7

PALESTINE — Jamal Kelly and K.J. Luster teamed up to deliver Overton a commanding victory in the opening round of the postseason.

The tandem accounted for more than 300 combined yards with five touchdowns in a 34-7 victory against Wortham in a Class 1A Division II bi-district playoff playoff Thursday night at Wildcat Stadium.

Kelly provided 13 carries for 164 yards and two touchdowns, while Luster completed 9 of 16 passes for 152 yards and three scores.

Overton (7-4), in the playoffs for the first time since 2005, advances to meet defending state champion Tenaha (6-4) in the area around. Wortham, meanwhile, completed the season with a 4-7 record.

Kelly’s touchdowns both occurred in the second half; the first a 17-yard run in the third quarter and the second a 3-yard plunge in the fourth.

Luster got the Mustangs on the scoreboard with a 40-yard touchdown pass to Julian Herndon with 6:04 left in the first quarter. The quarterback then hit Alex Yancey for a 12-yard TD with a minute left in the quarter, before finding Damion Dennis from 60 yards away with 1:26 showing in the third.

Overton led 28-7 at the break.

Brandon Campbell finished 13 of 28 for 119 yards to lead Wortham, which scored its only points in the second quarter.
