WAXAHACHIE — Texas College assembled together promising drives, only to see turnovers put the brakes on their winning chances.

Southwestern Assemblies of God created three turnovers in the red zone and defeated Texas College 24-13 in the regular season finale Saturday at Lumpkins Stadium.

TC wrapped up the season 2-8, more victories than the previous two years combined. SAGU finished the year 4-6 while evening the all-time series with the TC 3-3.

The Steers matched the Lions with two touchdowns, both coming on passes by Johnny Thomas, a converted senior wideout forced into action with injuries to junior Vincent McNeil and freshman Milton Harper.

The Lions led 15-0 after the first quarter thanks to TD runs by Landry Martinez (8 yards) and Cade Leuschner (36).

Thomas directed TC past midfield on eight possessions, four ending on turnovers and another on a missed field goal. Thomas (6-4, 190, Sr., New Orleans) went 12 for 23 for 107 yards and rushed for a team-high 72 yards,

Thomas rolled out the pocket and hit Kevan Hall for an 11-yard TD to make it a one-score game (15-7) early in the second quarter.

The Steers came close to pulling even on two occasions, only to lose a fumble at the Lions 11 and follow up with an interception in the end zone on the ensuring series.
