ARP — The Arp Tigers did whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted in staying undefeated in league play with a 55-0 victory over Hawkins at Bill Herrington Tiger Stadium on Friday night.
Arp 7-2 (5-0 District 10-2A Division II) made it evident early that any chance of Hawkins springing an upset would go by the wayside. On the Tigers’ opening possession, Michael Roberson jolted down the left sideline and was found by quarterback Chase Bonner for a 47-yard receiving touchdown.
The Tigers kept rolling right along after forcing Hawkins (2-8, 1-5) to punt on a three-and-out before setting up near midfield. After a run placed the Tigers inside enemy territory, Roberson was called on again and this time took off on his own for a 45-yard touchdown run. In his first three plays, Roberson accumulated 104 yards of total offense and scored twice.
Arp’s offense went to another one of its stellar backs when Marcalas Johnson finished off a six-play drive with a 10-yard TD run in wrapping up the first quarter.
Hawkins’ offense could find little — if any — room to run or pass with pressure from the Jeremy Shelton-led defense keeping the Hawks’ offense at bay. The Hawks punted four times, fumbled away the ball once and turned the ball over on downs once in the first half. Hawkins was held to 86 total yards in the first 24 minutes.
The Tigers were the polar opposite on offense as two more scores were tallied in the second quarter. Johnson scored his second TD from one yard out.
Mikechell Potts showed off his moves after receiving a pass from Bonner on a near-lateral, working his way to the left sideline before reversing field and clearing all 11 Hawkins defenders for a 53-yard score.
Potts nearly matched his own dazzling reception run when he took a rush — off an option toss — 47 yards to commence the second half.
Potts also added a 70-yard punt return later in the third. Potts finished with 170 all-purpose yards.
Arp’s final score came by way of a Jerome Sikes’ 7-yard quarterback keeper.
The Tigers finished with 363 total yards (246 rushing) and held Hawkins to 111 total yards.
Arp will wrap up the regular season at Winona at 7:30 p.m. next Friday.
Hawkins finishes the season by entertaining Cornerstone Christian at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
