LONGVIEW — The Longview Lobos (7-3, 4-2) took care of business Friday night as they took down Rockwall, 40-7, to preserve third place in District 12-5A and the top seed in the 5A Division II playoffs next week.

The Lobos will take on Rowlett in the opening round of the playoffs next Saturday at Kincaide Stadium in Dallas.

Thanks to 37 first-half points and stout defensive play all night, the Lobos had no trouble with the Yellowjackets offense on “Senior Night” at Lobo Stadium as they held them to 196 total yards.

Rockwall’s lone touchdown came late in the fourth quarter on a fumbled pitch by Longview and was returned by Daniel Roland, who took it 14 yards for the score.

After stalling on its first offensive possession, the Lobos got the scoring started when senior running back Tory White ran it in for two yards. The drive was set up by a Corey Bartley interception, his sixth of the season, at the Rockwall 35.

After stopping Rockwall on the following possession, it took the Lobos six plays as sophomore running back Ja’Mycal Hasty took the handoff 50 yards for a touchdown, extending the lead to 14-0.

Rockwall’s next drive stalled and Longview took over at its own 31.

A few plays later, Dezmond Chumley hooked up with Dorian Leonard for 57 yards to put the Lobos at the 1, White finished off the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, his second score of the night.

After a three-and-out by Rockwall, Longview took over at midfield and three plays later Chumley connected with senior Justinn Spady for a 29-yard touchdown pass, making the lead 28-0 with 6:28 left in the first half.

Once again, the Lobos defense stood tall and forced another punt by Rockwall. This time the punt was to Nakia Brown, who let the ball roll to the 43 and with no one from Rockwall around to down the punt, Brown scooped up the ball and ran untouched for the touchdown. The extra point was no good, making it 34-0.

The punt return was Brown’s third punt return of the season.

After a Travin Howard fumble recovery at the 27 for the Lobos, the drive stalled at the 23 and Andres Perez made a 40-yard field goal.

In the second half, Longview head coach John King sent in the backups and managed only one field goal, which came in the fourth quarter when Longview marched down to the 2 and Jose Sarmiento kicked a 19-yard field goal to make the lead 40-0 with 6:52 left in the game.

The Lobos’ third-place finish in district play ended their eight-year district championship run as Mesquite finished the season undefeated and District 12-5A champions.
