Lady Lions open with

win over Nacogdoches

NACOGDOCHES - The John Tyler Lady Lions opened their volleyball season with a 3-1 win over the Nacogdooches Lady Dragons.

JT won 23-25, 25-13, 25-16, 25-17. Standouts for the Lady Lions were: Lacorria Rollins (11 kills, block, 3 digs), Erynn Henderson-Ryder (15 serves, ace, 11 assists, 2 digs, 2 kills), Michiah McFarland (9 serves, 13 assists, 2 digs) and Symone Morris (4 kills, block, 8 serves, ace, 4 digs).

“We started out slow … had several passing and serving errors, but we picked up the pace after losing game one,” JT coach La’Messa Derrett said.

 

Grand Saline 3, Hawkins 0

HAWKINS - Grand Saline scored a 3-0 win over the Hawkins Lady Hawks in a volleyball opener on Tuesday.

The Lady Indians won 25-11, 25-20, 25-25. In JV A team action, Grand Saliene won 25-17, 25-8 and in JV B play, Hawkins won 25-18, 25-21.

Hawkins plays host to Cumberland on Friday. The first match is set to being at 4:30 p.m.

 

Brook Hill 3, Brownsboro 2

BULLARD - The Brook Hill Lady Guard scored a 3-2 win over Brownsboro on Tuesday in a volleyball opener.

BH rallied for a 13-25, 22-25, 25-8, 25-20, 15-5 win. Leaders for the Lady Guard were: Morgan Carpenter (11 kills), Madeline Reed (8 kills), Maddie Anthony (8 kills, 20 assists), Zoe Hayes (14 assists) and Katherine Modrick (33 digs).

Brownsboro won the JV match 2-1 (19-25, 25-20, 15-12).

 

TKG splits matches

ARP - The Bishop Gorman Lady Crusaders split volleyball matches with Arp and Rusk on Tuesday.

Gorman defeated Arp 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-14).

Standings for TKG were Kailyn Carl (hitting), Kassidy Fender (setting), Sydney Dacus (hitting), Lauren Fanning (defense), Mary-Helen Schurict (defense) and Paige Rebmann (blocking).

 

Grace 3, Gary 0

GARY - Grace Community opened its volleyball season with a 3-0 sweep over Gary on Tuesday.

The Lady Cougars won 25-18, 25-17, 25-23.

Standouts for Grace were: Zoe Wilson (3 aces), Isabella Ramirez (3 aces), Summer Tennison (6 kills), Rylan Wright (6 kills, 15 digs), Alexis Saczek (4 kills, 15 digs), Rebekah Sutton (14 assists) and Anne Hendricks (10 assists).

Grace captured the junior varsity match, 2-0 (25-11, 25-9).

 

Commerce 3, Rains 2

COMMERCE - The Rains Lady Cats opened the 2017 volleyball season Tuesday night with a hard-fought five-set loss to perennial 3A power Commerce.

The Lady Cats fell 25-15, 24-26, 21-25, 25-22, 15-6.

Leaders in defeat for Rains were Shelbi Sheppard (10 kills, 13 assists, 4 blocks, 2 aces, 24 digs) and McKenna Hildebrandt (8 kills, 7 blocks). Elissa Elliott and Presley McAree combined for 27 digs along the back row.

Next up for the Lady Cats will be the pool play round at the Garland ISD tournament on Friday. Rains will begin by facing Mesquite High, followed by Carrollton R.L. Turner and Garland Sachse.

 

Carthage 3, Bullard 0

CARTHAGE - Carthage defeated Bullard 3-0 in a volleyball match on Tuesday.

Carthage won 25-19, 25-14, 25-18.

Standouts for Bullard were Destinee Dixon (16 assists, 14 digs, 3 blocks), Sara McKeethan (9 kills, 15 digs 4 blocks), Kailan Bellew (13 digs) and Ashlyn Meador (7 kills, 4 blocks).

Carthage won the JV (25-13, 25-20) and freshmen (25-19, 25-22) matches.

 

Carlisle 3, Longview

Christian Heritage 1

PRICE - The Carlisle Lady Indians defeated Longview Christian Heritage 3-1 on Tuesday in volleyball.

Carlisle won 24-26, 25-15, 25-15, 25-14.

Leaders for Carlisle were: Heather Craig (12 kills, 8 aces, 7 digs), Aubrey Hart (10 kills, 5 blocks), Jailin Kee (25 assists, 8 digs) and Camdyn Gray (5 kills, 6 aces, 10 digs).

 

Whitehouse 3, Hallsville 2

WHITEHOUSE - Whitehouse defeated Hallsville, 3-2, in a volleyball match on Tuesday.

Whitehouse won 25-15, 17-25, 19-25, 25-20, 15-13.

Standouts for Whitehouse were: Briana Brown (10 kills), Grace Hendricks (8 kills, 18 assists, 18 digs), Kaitlyn Wood (8 kills, 4 blocks), Sydney Malmstrom (7 kills, 7 blocks), Sydnie Davis (5 kills, 5 blocks) and Macy Smith (25 digs).

Hallsville on the JV match (25-17, 25-19), while Whitehouse won the ninth-grade match, 25-18, 25-18.

 

Quitman 3, Tatum 1

QUITMAN - The Quitman Lady Bulldogs claimed a 3-1 win over Tatum on Tuesday in a volleyball match.

Quitman won 25-22, 24-26, 25-16, 25-14.

Leaders for Quitman were: Kaci Raley (10 digs, 24 kills, 4 blocks), Molly Tanner (18 digs, 8 kills, 3 aces, block), Cammie Hicks (12 digs, kill, ace, 37 assists) and Madalyn Spears (13 digs, 10 kills, ace, block).

Quitman won the JV match 25-18, 25-20, while Tatum claimed the freshmen match 25-22, 25-21.

 

Alba-Golden 3, Union Grove 1

UNION GROVE - The Alba-Golden Lady Panthers opened their volleyball season with a 3-1 win over Union Grove on Tuesday.

A-G won 25-20, 24-26, 25-21, 25-21.

Leading the Lady Panthers were Ginny Carson (14 kills, 10 digs, 3 aces), Kenzie Chadwick (10 kills), Lindsey Roberts (12 digs, 2 aces), Aspen Howard (10 digs, 14 assists), Hannah Ellis (2 blocks), Macie Pendergrass (2 blocks), Bralee Littlejohn (4 aces) and Ann Marie Pendergrass (2 aces).
