Smiley goes out a winner after bowl victory

COPPERAS COVE - Trinity Valley’s Prince Robinson returned an interception for a touchdown with 50 seconds on the clock in the fourth quarter as the No. 8 Cardinals defeated No. 12 Garden City (Kansas), 48-41, in the C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl on Saturday at Bulldawg Stadium.

It was the final game as TVCC coach for Brad Smiley who is leaving after 11 years as head coach to become the Northwestern State offensive coordinator.

TVCC (9-3) tied the game at 41-41 on a 42-yard field goal by Angel Sevier with a minute on the clock. Garden City ends its season at 8-4.

Cardinals quarterback Shelton Eppler connected on 21 of 47 passing attempts for 242 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Aphonso Thomas led the rushing attack with 103 yards on 15 carries.

Broncbuster QB Terry Wilson hit on 30 of 56 attempts for 333 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions.
