MESQUITE - Branson Ellis is charging toward a return to state.

The Robert E. Lee pole vaulter who finished runner-up at the state meet last year turned in a vault of 16 feet to win the District 11/12-6A area title on Thursday at Hanby Stadium.

The top four finishers in each event at the area meet Thursday qualified for the Class 6A Region II track and field championships next week in Waco.

Ellis, who surpassed his district championship mark by a foot, won’t be alone as both Lee and John Tyler will be represented at the regional meet.

The Lions advanced athletes in four events, including two each for Ke’Tavion Humber and Jerry Young.

Humber finished second in the 300 hurdles in a time of 39.48 seconds and third in the 110 hurdles at 14.76.

Young finished fourth in triple jump with a leap of 43-10 1/2 and was a member of the 4x100 relay team that also took fourth. Young, Caleb McMiller, Michael Givens-Washington and Kitan Crawford turned in a time of 41.79.

Lee senior Mary Claire Neal is going to regionals in record fashion.

Neal broke a school record by finishing the 800-meter run in a time of 2:18.06. She entered the event seeded sixth, but moved up two spots to finish fourth and book her spot at the regional meet.

The Red Raiders 4x200 relay finished seventh in a time of 1:29, with the 4x400 relay taking sixth in a time of 3:25.

In the boys 3,200, REL sophomore Haftu Knight set a personal record by finishing in 9:42, but it wasn’t enough to get him to regionals as Knight finished fifth. Knight also came close in the 1,600, finishing fifth again.

Lady Raiders freshman Sarah Niedrauer competed at area for the first time and finished eighth in the 3,200.

Her older brother Nathan Niedrauer was seventh in boys shot put after he was awarded a spot at area because the 11-6A’s fourth-place finisher couldn’t make it.

Lee junior Mah’Layzga Johnson delivered a career-best last week in shot put at district to reach area. She threw 32-11 to finish eighth overall on Thursday.

Two John Tyler sprinters were on the verge of reaching regionals. McMiller (10.78) and Young (10.84) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 100.

The Lions’ 4x200 relay team, made up of the same runners as the 4x100 team, finished sixth in 1:29.26.

John Tyler's Bri Criss finished seventh in discus with a throw of 96-6.

Red Raiders sophomore Benjamin Dene finished seventh in the 300 hurdles.

In the team competitions, the Longview girls tied with Mesquite Horn at 96 points for first place, followed by The Woodlands on 93 in a tight competition. Mesquite was fourth with 70 points.

The Woodlands boys had a more comfortable win, racking up 176 points to outdistance Conroe Oak Ridge’s 123. College Park (74) and Horn (68) rounded out the top four.
