Area netters competing in state tournament

COLLEGE STATION - The UIL Tennis Championships get underway at 8 a.m. Thursday with singles quarterfinals from George P. Mitchell Tennis Center and Omar Smith Intramural Tennis Center on Texas A&M University of campus.

The winner advance to the semifinals slated for later in the afternoon. The championship matches are scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Friday.

Many area netters will be aiming to win championships.

Haleigh Dollins of Hawkins is at state for a second consecutive year in girls singles, and this time she wants to stay longer. Dollins was taken out in straight sets last year in her singles quarterfinal by the eventual state runner-up.

This year Dollins opens up the 2A girls singles draw against Jonnah Smith of Wink.

The other half of the 2A girls singles draw features Jennifer Ha, of Lufkin Pineywoods Community Academy. She will face Mason’s Ryli Ruffin.

In Class 2A boys singles, Noah Ingram of Martin’s Mill faces off against a reigning state champion - all be it in boys doubles a year ago - Caleb Horne of Mason.

In Class 2A girls doubles, the Martin’s Mill team of Alexis Box and Adrianna Weatherford face Mason’s Kate Gillespie/Lanie Schmidt.

On the other half of the 2A girls doubles draw is Daniel Landaverde and Aracely Rivera of Martin’s Mill. They will face Raegan Glentz and Sara Powell of Mason. The winner moves onto the semifinals against the winner of Dawson’s Morgan Freland/Emma Reeder and Olton’s Kea Sandoval/Soldedad Pedroza.

In Class 3A boys singles, Will Humphries of Nacogdoches Central Heights is back at state after reaching the semifinals a year ago. He opens against Nicholas Martinez of Lyford. White Oak’s Collin Goode and Central Heights’ Nathan Badders also qualified for state in boy singles. Goode opens against Riley Robbins of Shallowater while Badders faces Dillon Humpal of Corpus Christi. Wins for Goode and Badders would pit the two area reps against one another in the semifinals, scheduled for 2 p.m.

In 3A girls singles, Central Heights’ Reagan Humphries will open against Abby Alexander from Wall. Reagan also made it to state last year, but was stopped in the first round. Alexander was the state runner-up a year ago.

In 4A boys singles, Henderson’s Adam Morris qualified for state and now faces Burkburnett’s Marcus Kleckner in the quarterfinals. A win moves him into the semifinals at 2 p.m. against either Casey Voss of Robinson or Ryan Koth of Boerne.

In 4A boys doubles, teams from Kilgore and Spring Hill are on opposite sides of the bracket. Tyrese Sheffield/Ian St. Clair from Kilgore will face Hunter Morris/Mason Stox of Bellville. At the same time, Spring Hill’s Kavin Patel/Blake Zeilinger meet up with Wharton’s Taylor Jetelina/Nick Niemeier. Those matches are scheduled for 10:30 a.m.

In 4A girls singles, Palestine’s Stevie Ybarra and Lufkin Hudson’s Kristina Johnson are on opposite sides of the bracket as both area players seek to advance. The matches begin at 9 a.m. Ybarra opens against Navya Chunduru of Frisco Lebanon Trail and Johnson takes on Hollie Hutto of Kaufman. The winners advance to the semifinals at 3 p.m.

In 4A girls doubles, the Wills Point team of Maddie Booth and Claire Hiler represent the area and open against Abilene Wylie’s Analeah Elias and Emly Corn. Both matches are scheduled for noon. The winner moves on to the semifinals at 4:30 p.m.

In 4A mixed doubles, Wills Point’s Chase Daniel/Kelsey James will meet Liberty Hill’s Kennedy Coleman/Gunnar Ortega in their quarterfinal opener at 1 p.m.. The semifinals are scheduled for 5 p.m.

In Class 5A, Texas High’s boys doubles team of Quinn Sanders and Walker Trippe will begin their state tournament in the quarterfinals at 10 a.m. against Lubbock Coronado’s Quentin Scharfenberg/Indy Axton. The semifinals are scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

Corsicana’s Jamison Teague and Crystalyn Shirley will be in action in a 5A girls doubles quarterfinal against A&M Consolidated’s Natalia Cruz-Vespa/Neha Gopal. That match is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. with the semifinals at 4 p.m.
