Apaches blank Coastal Bend

The TJC baseball team has won national championships in Tyler and Kinston, North Carolina. The Apaches would like to add a third to their résumé.

Tyler Junior College started its journey toward that World Series berth in Greeneville, Tennessee, scoring a 5-0 win over Coastal Bend on Thursday in the NJCAA Division III District C Tournament at Mike Carter Field.

The Apaches (35-20) advance to 4 p.m. game on Friday against either Eastfield (26-24).

The Cougars (30-25) will meet North Lake (25-25) at 9 a.m. in an elimination game.

James Kuykendall (11-4) tossed eight shutout innings to power the Apaches to the victory.

Kuykendall, a sophomore from Spring, allowed two hits, while striking out nine and walking five. Taylor Broadway, a freshman from Cypress, pitched the ninth to close out the victory.

TJC scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings before putting up a two-spot, on a two-run homer by Jordan Trahan in the ninth.

Colton Whitehouse was 3 for 3 at the plate with Broadway adding two hits and an RBI. Braden Wise, Jarel McDade and Matt Mikusek added this for TJC.

Marcel Carter (double) and Henry Hausman (single) got the only baseknocks for the Cougars.

Jose Valdez (2-4) hurled all nine innings for Coastal Bend, allowing nine hits, three earned runs with nine strikeouts and one walk. The Cougars were hurt by three errors.

TJC is now 5-3 against Coastal Bend this season.

SMOKE SIGNALS: The winner of the double-elimination tournament advances to the NJCAA D-III World Series beginning May 27 in Greeneville, Tennessee. … A tournament pass is $20 with day session prices $7 for adults and $5 for students with IDs and children over 6. There is no admission charge for children under 6.
