LUFKIN - Lufkin’s Lady Panthers settled a potential defensive battle with John Tyler midway through the first quarter and dominated the rest of the way in a 68-34 Lady Pack win Tuesday night at Shands Gymnasium.
The Lady Panthers allowed just 34 points in their season opener against Houston C.E. King last week, while the Lady Lions gave up 40 to North Forney.
In Tuesday’s opening moments, Lufkin and Tyler battled in a low-scoring affair until the Lady Panthers erupted in 7-2 scoring run to pull away.
Kassity McKenzie led the Lady Lions with seven points and six rebounds, while; Makia Moon, Jazmine Hicks and J’Kimbra Criss had six points apiece. Hicks had five rebounds and Criss contributed 4.
Alexis Hood led the Lady Pack’s scoring attack with 16 points that included a pair of three pointers. Kurstyn Harden anchored the paint, leading to multiple trips to the free-throw line, where she scored five of her 11 points. Mycah McDonald added nine points and Brianna Davis seven to help push Lufkin to 2-0 on the season.
JT’s game with Mount Vernon scheduled for Friday has been canceled the Tigers in the football playoffs. The Lady Lions will compete in the Rains ISD Tournament Monday and Tuesday in Emory.
The Lady Panthers travel to Tyler Lee on Monday for a 1:30 p.m. matinee.
