Clay Hodge played steady throughout the weekend to capture the Men’s Club Golf Championship on Sunday at Willow Brook Country Club.
It was the first WBCC title for Hodge, who in 2002 won the Hollytree Club championship as a 17-year-old junior at Grace Community School.
Hodge, a former Texas A&M golfer, carded a three-round total of 213 to win by five strokes over runner-up Joel Hackney. Jacky Lee was third at 224.
“It’s pretty cool to win this tournament and to have my name on the list of former winners,” said Hodge, who works at the family business of East Texas Alarm. “I putted well. I had to scramble a bit, especially today.”
Hodge had consistent rounds of 70, 71 and 72 to claim the title. Hackney took the first round lead with a 69 and followed with rounds of 73 and 76 for a 218 total. Lee had rounds of 74, 72 and 78.
Rounding out the top five were Clay Cavender (73-79-74-226) and Clay Snyder (80-77-75-232).
Defending champion Cody Massa did not participate this year.
The championship flight played 54 holes, while the other flights played 36.
The golfers played the front nine twice as the WBCC course is undergoing renovations.
Clark Hampe Jr. claimed the First Flight with a 152 (77-75). He was followed by Brian Holcomb (72-81-153) and Bob Breedlove (78-76-154).
Rob Allen captured the Second Flight with a 152 (80-72) with Jeff Feliciano second at 164 (86-78). Brandon Ashwood was third at 165 (85-80).
In the Third Flight, Greg Schultz topped the field with a 165 (83-82). Fred Haberle was runner-up at 169 (88-81) and Steve Pinkston was third at 172 (87-85).
