Arp's Greer places fifth at UIL state golf tournament

AUSTIN - Four trips to state and two Top 5 finishes.

Arp senior Gracie Greer carded a 12-over 84 Tuesday to finish fifth after the second and final round of the UIL Class 3A Girls State Golf Tournament held both days on the 5,215-yard Grey Rock Golf Course.

Greer’s 163 total (79-84) left her three strokes back of Rockdale’s Lyndy Laurell and Alpine’s Morgan Molsbee, who tied for third place. Laurell captured the bronze thanks to a playoff.

The 3A girls champion was Comfort’s Lauren Nevers, who delivered matching 6-over 78s on both days to hold off the charge from McGregor’s Paige Gilstrap (81-77–158).

As for Greer: she made her debut as state as a freshman before returning as a sophomore and finishing fifth. Last year in her third-straight trip to Austin she was 10th and now can add a second Top 5 to her list.

The 3A girl’s team state champion was Sonora (346-356–702), which combined to shoot 702 and defeat second-place Callisburg (367-361–728) by 26 strokes. Rockdale (372-390–762) was third.

Union Grove’s Caitlin Fisher also produced a Top 5 finish at the Class 2A Girls state tournament held at Roy Kizer Golf Course in Austin. She entered the day in sixth place after Monday’s 84, but was able to move up after producing an 85 on Tuesday for a 169. She finished tied for fifth with Paige DeJong of Hamilton. Maycee Blaydes of Memphis (77-85–162) was third with Jillian Jones of Forsan (79-78–157) second and Christoval’s Taylor Tomlinson (76-76–152) finishing as 2A girls champion.

Memphis (343-386–729) won the 2A girls team title with Forsan (738) in second and Wellington (754) finishing third. Grapeland and Martin’s Mill represented East Texas in the event with Grapeland finishing sixth overall and Martin’s Mill seventh.

Competing for Grapeland (378-408–786) were Hannah Chipman (85-95–180), Jenna Lawrence (91-96–187), Carly Parker (104-102–206), Madelyn Conner (98-115–213) and Callie Richburg (137-126–263).

Competing for Martin’s Mill (430-406–836) were Sarah Dillard (94-88–182), Ashlyn Wright (109-96–205), Macy Davis (104-102–206), Mackenzie Phillips (123-120–243) and Julianna Grapevine (127-124–251).

In Class 4A, Spring Hill’s Zoe Mayfield bounced back from an opening-round 81 and charged up the leaderboard Tuesday, thanks to a 76 to finish tied for fifth with fellow East Texan Hannah Halton (79-78) of Pleasant Grove and Senimole’s Lauren Franco (80-77) at 157.

Abilene Wylie’s Maddi Olson (70-76–146) held off Bridgeport’s Brooke Iron (76-71–147) to win state medalist. Iron was runner-up with Lorena’s Steelie Priest (78-75–153) finishing third at Slick Rock Golf Course at Horeshoe Bay in Marble Falls.

Andrews took first and third place in the team competition with Andrews Black (334-314–648) winning the 4A girl state title, Seminole (357-354–711) in second and Andrews Gold (355-366–721) finishing third.

Mabank (381-372–753) and Spring Hill (416-383–799) finished seventh and 12th, respectively with Lufkin Hudson 13th.

Competing for Mabank (381-372–753) were Haley Mashburn (88-87–175), Elizabeth Hardy (89-91–180), Kathryne German (100-95–195) and Hanna Smith (104-99–203).

Competing for Spring Hill (416-383–799) were Mayfield, J’Dee Stovall (103-96–199), Tyler Newman (102-102–204), Madison Philbrick (130-114–244) and Graci Iltis (WD). Competing for Hudson (396-409–805) were Rachael Green (87-93–180), Murphy McDermott (86-95–181), Brittany Ferrara (105-105–210) and Elizabeth Bowman (130-128–258).
