Turner scores 30 as Steers avenge loss to Wiley

Blake Turner’s hot shooting sparked the fire as Texas College evened a score with a 95-87 win in a barnburner against arch-rival Wiley.

Turner tore up the nets for 30 points, helping TC avenge an earlier loss to Wiley in Marshall last month with the Steers ranked No. 10 in the nation at the time.

Turner, a 6-0 sophomore shooting guard and Robert E. Lee product, went 9 for 13 from the floor and 8 for 8 at the free-throw line to tilt the tide in Thursday’s showdown at Gus F. Taylor Gymnasium.

After Wiley sliced a 10-point deficit to a single shot (90-87) in the final minute, Turner iced the victory with four free throws as TC scored the final five points. Turner made all six of his free-throw attempts over the last 65 seconds.

TC seniors Jamal Robertson (19 points), Kerry Jones (17 points), Titus Stevenson (10 points) and Eddren McCain (seven points, six assists) all contributed big in their last home games.

The Steers secured their 20th win on the season after beginning the week receiving three votes in the NAIA rankings (35th overall).

The win by TC (20-8, 13-7 in Red River Athletic Conference) combined with a loss by Our Lady of the Lake (18-12, 14-8) against first-place Southwestern Assemblies of God (25-3, 18-2) moved the Steers into fourth place heading into the final week of league action.

TC relied heavily on its perimeter game, with six different players combining for 10 3-pointers. McCain’s trey gave the Steers the lead for good (49-46) early in the second half.

Turner topped TC with four makes from downtown with Robertson raining home two shots from beyond the arc.

Karlos Gray poured in a game-high 23 points for Wiley (15-13, 9-11) with Anthony Jackson adding 19 points.

WOMEN

Danisha Shaw scored 34 points and Alisha Carruthers netted 20 to lead Wiley to a comfortable 87-55 win over Texas College.

Shaw sparked Wiley on both ends, pulling down 10 rebounds and adding six steals. Shaw, a 5-6 junior from Kenner, La., who transferred from Paris, hit 12 of 16 field goals, including both attempts from downtown.

Carruthers, a 5-10 senior from Houston who spent time at Tyler Junior College, made 10 of 18 shots and grabbed six caroms.

Wiley held the lead for the final minutes, using its defense to force 32 turnovers and limit Texas College to a 32-percent shooting effort.

Connie Espinas bucketed a game-high 12 points for TC and Ashli Smith posted 11 points and nine rebounds.

Keyara Criner contributed seven points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots for the Lady Steers.
