FORNEY — Whitehouse hung around until the final moments, but wasn’t able to complete the comeback.
Having trailed by 14 points early in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats shot their way back into contention and trailed by only five with less than a minute left. But despite struggling at the free throw line during the final frame, Mansfield Legacy held on for a 54-47 win in a Class 4A boys bi-district basketball matchup Tuesday night at Forney High School.
Legacy, which made only 7 of 19 free throws during the fourth, led 43-29 with 7:33 left and seemed on the way to a blowout victory. But the Broncos were up against a resilient Wildcats squad, which faced similarly tough opponents in District 16-4A in league champion Jacksonville and John Tyler.
Legacy (25-9), which hails from a powerhouse league in District 15-4A, advances to meet the winner between Sherman and Marshall in the area round. Whitehouse completed the season with a 22-10 record.
No doubt the biggest team Whitehouse has faced in a while, Legacy put its deep bench on display and got a team-high 19 points from 6-5 junior Chad Pursley. As the Broncos took control during the final three minutes of the third, Pursley was fed the ball in the post to score seven straight points to help Legacy take a 42-29 lead into the fourth.
Whitehouse’s Patrick Mahomes finished at just about his per-game scoring average, leading the Wildcats with a game-high 21 points and seven rebounds. With Legacy leading by 10 points early in the fourth, the junior drained his third 3-pointer of the night to signal that Whitehouse wasn’t about to fold.
Mahomes also provided the game’s top highlight, a breakaway dunk with 30 seconds left in the first half.
