HS Soccer Roundup, Feb. 19: Lee girls win shootout

Robert E. Lee (0-4-1, 2 pts) grabbed its first points in District 12-5A Tuesday thanks to a come-from behind effort against North Mesquite.

The Lady Raiders trailed 3-2 in the second half of overtime with time running out when Julia Harrison completed her hat trick with a goal off a pass from Kendall Bullock.

This meant both teams had earned at least a point and the overall winner would be decided on a penalty shootout. Lee keeper Alyson Johnson saved North Mesquite’s last attempt, enabling Brooke Johnston to score the game winner. North Mesquite also got a point to make its record 2-1-2 in district play.

“It was just nuts,” said Lee coach Chris Woodard. “Just to see everyone smiling afterward was great. The girls battled hard and (got the result).”

Lee led 2-0 early on off two goals by Harrison off assists from Johnston and Ariel Howell. North Mesquite rallied back to tie and then take the lead in the first half of overtime.

North Mesquite stops Red Raiders

MESQUITE — A goal in the closing seconds of the first half and penalty kick in the second half stopped Lee 2-1 Tuesday as the Red Raiders fell to North Mesquite at Memorial Stadium.

The Red Raiders (4-1-0, 12 pts) grabbed a goal in the first half on a penalty kick goal from Lumi Kaba, but allowed the equalizer with 25 seconds to play in the half.

North Mesquite (3-1-1, 11 pts) grabbed the game winner in the second half on what REL coach Marty Germany deemed a “questionable call for a penalty,”

Germany continued. “I don’t think there was enough contact to warrant the PK, but it is what it is. We didn’t do enough to win the game tonight and we need to bounce back from it.”
