Lee's Hudson swims to bronze

ROCKWALL — It has become tradition for Lee to not only qualify for regionals, but come away with top six finishes and medals.

That continued Friday and Saturday at the Class 5A Region III Swimming and Diving Championships at Rockwall ISD Aquatic Center. REL finished in the top six in five events, led by sophomore David Hudson, who took bronze in the 200-yard individual medley. Hudson also was sixth in the 100-yard backstroke.

Robert E. Lee coach Matt Franks called his team’s performance a success.

A youthful Lee team survived through a difficult preliminary to qualify for 20 final Saturday swims — top eight prelim times made the finals and nine-16 times were in consolation — with Emily Stanford, Hudson and Jack Oliver reaching the finals.

The boys finished 11th as a team with the girls 14th.

“I think we did really well,” Franks said. “Considering we are in a rebuilding mode; we had close to 40 best-time swims over the course of Friday and Saturday and got a lot of kids back for second swims on Saturday.

“Including our relay events; and that was probably better than I thought we could’ve done. The boys were as good as any team I’ve ever had as far as stepping up (in the moment). Knowing how this region was going to be a whole different animal from district, we were right there with them.”

Stanford turned in top six finishes in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke. Hudson was sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke and Oliver sixth in the 100-yard butterfly.

The Lee boys 200-yard freestyle relay team also qualified for the finals, with Oliver, Hudson, Seth Oldham and Tanner Anderson finishing eighth.

The first place finisher in each event qualified for the Class 5A state meet, joined by the top eight times from around the state. Franks also believes Hudson’s time in the 200-yard individual medley could be enough to get him a spot in Austin, but will find out later this week.

“He will probably just miss out on getting called up, but (with this performance), he’s definitely in the mix (the next two years) to be in the mix for state,” Franks said.
