John Tyler football looking to regroup with home game after tough outing at Rockwall

After last year’s loss to Rockwall, John Tyler ran off six straight wins to capture the district football championship.

The Lions hope to repeat that feat, but the score against the Yellow Jackets was a bit different this year. Last year was a 1-point loss, while last Friday it was by 41.

JT is still ranked No. 8 in the latest Texas High School Coaches Association Class 6A Region II poll, but the Lions need to get back on the winning track if they want to stay in the top 10 and stay in contention for the league championship.

Along with John Tyler, East Texas clubs took it on the chin last week with all the Metroplex clubs taking wins in District 11-6A. The Lions fell to Rockwall (48-7), while Tyler Lee lost to Rockwall-Heath (24-14) and Longview dropped a 52-34 decision to Mesquite Horn. The other contest saw North Mesquite score a 39-24 win over Mesquite.

After playing three of their first four games on the road, the Lions are happy to be back in the Rose City this week after scoring their fewest points in a game since a 31-7 loss to Klein on Dec. 5, 2009 in the Class 5A Division II state quarterfinals.

The Lions (2-2, 0-1 in 11-6A) will try to snap that two-game losing streak when they play host to North Mesquite (3-1, 1-0) on Friday at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Earl Campbell Field.

Coach Ricklan Holmes is hopeful of getting back running back Cam Grant, who missed last week’s game as the junior was in concussion protocol.

After the contest with the Stallions, JT will not be at home again until Oct. 27 when the Lions host Longview. John Tyler plays at Mesquite on Oct. 6, followed by a bye week, and at Rockwall-Heath on Oct. 20.
