Robert E. Lee, John Tyler set up for strong Day 2 at District 11-6A track and field meet

ROCKWALL - John Tyler and Robert E. Lee athletes seek district glory in the second and final day of the District 11-6A track and field championships Thursday at Wilkerson-Sanders Memorial Stadium.

The top four finishers in each event qualify for the District 11/12-6A area meet next week in Mesquite.

On the first day of the competition Tuesday, JT’s Jerry Young qualified by finishing second in triple jump. Shot put, pole vault and the 3,200-meter run were also held Tuesday, while long jump, high jump, discus and the remaining running finals will be Thursday.

A number of Lee and JT runners scheduled to participate after prelims on Tuesday. Both the Lions, Red Raiders and Lady Lions will have teams running in all three relays while the Lady Raiders will run only the 4x400 relay.

Lee’s Benjamin Dene qualified in prelims in the 110 and 300 hurdles. He’ll be joined by fellow Red Raiders Ty Valdez and Simon Gachibi, who are running both the 800 and 1,600, as well as Haftu Knight in the 1,600. The 800 and 1,600 did not hold prelims.

The Lady Raiders also qualified one hurdler from Tuesday: Genisis Emanuel in the 300 hurdles. Joining her running for the Lee girls squad Thursday will be Mary Claire Neal (800, 1,600) and Sarah Niedrauer (1,600).

John Tyler will have a number of athletes competing Thursday after Tuesday’s prelims, including Ke'Tavion Humber, who qualified in both hurdles races. He’ll be joined in the 110 race by teammate Kiante Stoker.

Also running for the Lions will be Stephen Brown (800), Landon Bowie (800, 400), Caleb McMiller (100), Young (100), Juston Walker (400) and Michael Givens-Washington (200).

On the girls side for JT will be Skyler Humphrey (800), Destini Whitehead (400) and Amber Gonzalez (1,600).
