Quick Slant: The Timpson Bears have already slayed one Dragon this postseason by upsetting three-time defending state champion Bremond, 14-11, in the area round. It was Bremond’s first loss in three years. Prior to that, the last time Bremond tasted defeat was in 2013 in the state quarterfinals. The team responsible: Tenaha. … The Tenaha Tigers won it all in 2011 and were state runners-up in 2012. Tenaha’s drive for a third state title in the trophy case (1998, 2011) has been derailed in recent years, falling in the quarterfinals last year and semifinals the three years before that. … Timpson is enjoying its best season since 2003. The Bears also reached the quarterfinals in 1992. Timpson has never played in a semifinal. … Tenaha brings a high-powered offense to Royse City, led by senior quarterback C.J. Horn, who has passed for 2,573 yards and 35 touchdowns with only three interceptions. His favorite targets are receivers Trai Gardner and Jay Lloyd. Gardner, a senior, leads with 49 catches for 1,020 yards and 15 TDs with Lloyd, a junior, entering with 33 catches for 600 yards and 9 TDs. If the opposition doesn’t respect the run, senior RB Onterio Thompson will cut them apart. He is averaging 13.6 yards per carry for 2,024 yards and 26 touchdowns. On defense, Tenaha is as impressive, if not more. Last week Iola did something no team has been able to accomplish against Tenaha since its Sept. 1 opener - score more than 9 points. Tenaha edged Joaquin 23-22 in that first game and has since outscored its last 12 opponents 652-55. … Timpson can take heart in that it has already upset one heavily favored opponent and it is getting its second crack at Tenaha this season. The Tigers were one of those 12 opponents unable to break the 9-point barrier in a 40-6 district loss to Tenaha. The Bears are coming off a runaway win against Grapeland in which Jordan Osby accounted for six rushing touchdowns and five two-point conversions on the way to 284 yards in a 67-28 win. Timpson is scoring 35.7 points per game and allowing opponents to score 18 per contest. … The winner of this game faces the winner of Burton and Falls City next week in the 2A Division II semifinals.
