Tyler Lee unable to overcome slow start in 56-28 home loss to Mesquite Horn

Tyler Lee spotted Mesquite Horn 21 points and was in catch-up mode afterward. The Red Raiders never were able to get their deficit under double digits in an eventual 56-28 loss Friday at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium.

The Red Raiders (3-3, 0-3 in 11-6A) rushed for 338 yards as a team, led by junior Ladarius Wickware, who finished with 128 yards, highlighted by a 44-yard touchdown. Senior quarterback Chance Amie rushed for 85 yards and threw a 31-yard scoring pass to Marquis Gray with other rushing touchdowns by Lanthony Simmons and Jordan Printers.

The rest of the night belonged to the Jaguars, and in particular, Mesquite Horn junior Jermaine Givens. The Jaguars quarterback rushed 14 times for 159 yards and three touchdowns and completed 16 of 24 for 255 yards and two scores.

Even a clock malfunction nearly midway through the second quarter did not put off the Jaguars, which finished with 593 total yards and punted just once.

Lee’s passing game was grounded as Amie was held to 7 of 12 for 63 yards.

His scoring pass got Robert E. Lee on the board late in the first quarter as Gray was left uncovered and Amie hit him in stride.

Horn answered with two more TDs, one from Taylor and the other by Givens to push out to a 35-7 advantage.

Lee fired back with a 44-yard scoring run by Wickware, but couldn’t prevent Horn from adding to its lead, 42-14, on a 16-yard TD pass from Givens to Cornell Caldwell.

Undaunted and not knowing how much time was left in the half because of the malfunction, Amie drove the Red Raiders 74 yards in 10 plays with Simmons capping the drive with a 2-yard scoring run and 42-21 halftime score.

The Red Raiders forced Horn to punt on its opening drive on the second half. With a chance to slice into their deficit even more, Lee fumbled near midfield.

Horn recovered and never blinked again, scoring in 11 plays.

The teams each traded touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Lee is idle next week before hosting Mesquite. That kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20 back on Earl Campbell Field at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium.

Note: The game clock malfunctioned and was not used after the second quarter.
