HENDERSON - Gunner Capps passed for 241 yards and four touchdowns, leading the No. 1 ranked Carthage Bulldogs to a 42-17 win over previously unbeaten Henderson in District 9-4A Division I play on Friday.
Capps completed 12 of 15 passes on the night, tossing two long touchdown strikes to Dee Bowens in the second half after connecting on a pair of short TD tosses to Dewaylon Ingram in the first half.
Keaontay Ingram carried 17 times for 63 yards and a touchdown for the Bulldogs (5-0, 1-0), and Bowens finished the night with four catches for 169 yards and two touchdowns.
Trae Hall completed 9 of 17 passes for 153 yards in the loss for Henderson (5-0, 1-1).
Carthage got on the board first when Keaontay Ingram blasted in from 1-yard out with 8:04 to play in the first period, but the PAT failed and Henderson took the lead with 6:27 to play in the initial quarter on a 9-yard run by Hall and Axel Romero’s extra point.
Capps then put Carthage on top to stay with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Dewaylon Ingram six seconds into the second quarter. Keaontay Ingram added the two-point conversion for a 14-7 Carthage lead.
Mykel Gates returned a fumble 20 yards for a Carthage score to put the Bulldogs in front 21-7, and then hit Dewaylon Ingram from five yards out to boost the lead to 28-7.
Henderson got a 26-yard field goal from Romero late in the half, but trailed 28-10 at intermission.
Capps and Bowens hooked up on a 70-yard scoring toss with 9:28 to play in the third, and then connected again from 74 yards out with 10:50 to play in the contest to put the game away.
Hall’s 3-yard run with 8:00 showing on the clock capped the scoring.
Carthage will host Kilgore next Friday. Henderson is idle.
