Quindarius Johnson, Winona’s standout running back, has been named the American State Bank Player of the Week for Week 3 of the 2017 high school football season, Tim Haugh, ASB vice president, announced on Tuesday.
The sophomore Johnson had a solid game in leading the Wildcats to a 45-28 victory over Grand Saline on Friday night in Grand Saline. Johnson rushed for 266 yards and four touchdowns on 17 carries.
Others receiving votes from all of the nominations received were: Tyler Lee running back Ladarius Wickware, Bishop Gorman quarterback Jake Smith and John Tyler wide receiver/defensive back Michael Givens-Washington.
“Quin brings it hard every day,” Winona coach Keylon Kincade said. “He always gives it his best and this award gives satisfaction to all of the hard work. Most of his yards were gained after making folks miss and then picking up big chunks of yardage. This award is well-deserved and I am very proud of him for earning it. The rest of the team also responded well to the change we had in practice and that help us beat a tough, well-coached Grand Saline team.”
Haugh added, “Quin had himself quite a game. Anytime you can average over 15 yards per carry, while at the same time hitting pay dirt four times, you certainly get the attention of our voters. Just as in all weeks, we got some good nominations, but Quin’s performance just stood out above them all this week. And on top of the stellar performance on the field, he is a 3.0 student in the classroom, too.”
Winona returns to play on Friday, traveling to Redwater.
