LUFKIN - For the fourth straight game, John Tyler and Lufkin were involved in an old-fashioned East Texas shootout.

The Lions had won the first three, but this time it was the Panthers’ turn as Lufkin scored a 44-34 victory over JT before 10,500 fans Friday night at Abe Martin Stadium.

Lufkin led 37-14 in the third quarter, but JT scored 20-straight points to pull within 37-34 with 6:12 on the clock in the fourth.

However, Lufkin got some breathing room when standout running back Isaiah Phillips, who had been held in check by the Lions, burst through the middle for 57 yards and a TD with 4:05 on the clock. That gave Lufkin a 44-34 lead.

JT drove inside the Lufkin 5, but could not convert with under a minute to play.

Lions quarterback Devlen Woods threw for 311 yards and three touchdowns. Woods hit on 19 of 29 attempts. He tossed TD passes to Cameron Grant (15 yards), Ke’Andre Street (26) and Michael Givens-Washington (14).

Roderick Hawkins scored on runs of 19 and 4 yards.

Phillips rushed for 126 yards on 22 carries, while quarterback Kewone Thomas rushed for 106 yards.

JT had 433 total yards to Lufkin’s 396.

Givens-Washington had an interception that set up his eventual TD pass.
