Van quarterback Garrett Moseley has picked up where he left off last year.

Moseley continues to put up impressive numbers and last week he had one of his better games, leading his Vandals from a four touchdown deficit to a 48-34 victory over Princeton.

For his efforts, Moseley was named the “American State Bank Player of the Week” for Week 2 of the 2017 high school football season, Tim Haugh, ASB vice president, announced on Tuesday.

After falling into a 27-0 hole at the hands of Princeton, Moseley helped Van mount a huge comeback that ultimately ended in a 48-34 win for the Vandals, as they improved to 2-0. The win bolted Van into the No. 10 spot of the Associated Press State High School Football Poll.

Moseley accounted for 506 total yards and five touchdowns. He was 13 of 27 passing for 337 yards and three touchdowns, plus he carried the ball 29 times for 169 yards and two more touchdowns.

Others receiving votes from all of the nominations received were: Bishop Gorman running back Jeremiah Milton, Canton safety/quarterback/wide receiver Simon Miller, John Tyler quarterback Devlen Woods and Lindale running back Jordan Robinson.

“We got off to a rough start with a couple of first quarter fumbles, one returned for a touchdown which helped put us in big hole early,” Van head coach Jared Moffatt said. “This game is indicative of the type of player Garrett is because after fumbling twice and throwing five uncatchable passes in the first quarter, Garrett regrouped and went on a tear. Adversity seems to make him play harder and that bleeds off to the rest of the team. He is a very unique kid, a special player. I haven’t had too many like him in my 20 years of coaching.”

Added Haugh, “Absolutely no surprise here. Garrett is a solid football player that has constantly led the Vandals to much success in recent seasons. He was the Week 10 ASB Player of the Week winner last season and ended second in the voting for the ASB Player of the Year, all while leading the Vandals four rounds deep in the 2016 state playoffs. I look forward to seeing what else he can do to help lead the Vandals for the rest of the season.”

Each weekly winner (weeks 1-11) of the American State Bank Player of the Week award automatically receives an invitation to the end of the year banquet to recognize the weekly winners.

One of those 11 weekly winners will be pledged a $10,000 scholarship to the college, university or accredited trade school of their choice, while all weekly winners will be pledged a $2,500 scholarship to the college, university or accredited trade school of their choice.

Only players nominated will be considered for this weekly award. To nominate a player, visit www.asbplayeroftheweek.com .
