Junior quarterback Devlen Woods and safety Tyus Grayson earned Players of the Week in John Tyler’s 27-23 victory over Ennis, JT coach Ricklan Holmes announced on Monday.
Woods threw for four touchdown passes in leading the Lions to the come-from-behind win, the third win in four games against former district foe Ennis.
Woods hit on 8 of 15 passing attempts for 147 yards. He tossed two TD passes to Jaivon Williams for 16 and 13 yards. Also, Woods hit Roderick Hawkins for a 20-yard touchdown reception and connected with Ke’Andre Street on a 30-yard TD.
The 5-7, 165-pound signal-caller also rushed for 10 yards on seven attempts.
Defensively, Grayson was all over the field as the Lions, after falling behind 17-7, kept Ennis scoreless until a score with 20 seconds remaining.
Grayson, a 5-10, 170-pound senior, registered 10 tackles, four assists, including one for a loss. He also broke up a pass attempt.
For the second straight week, kicker/punter Frankie Sanchez earned the Special Teams award. The 5-8, 150-pound junior connected on all three extra point attempts, plus he punted for an average of 41.0 yards. Included in those punts was a 58-yarder. He also had a touchback on five kickoffs.
Six Lions earned the Lion Heart award, Holmes said.
The award winners included:
-Wide receiver Jaivon Williams: two catches for 29 yards, both of which went for TDs
-Running back Cam Grant: 17 carries for 91 yards
-Offensive lineman Samuel Meneses: graded 90 percent with a pancake block
-Cornerback Nicholas Thompson: seven tackles with two passes broken up
-Linebacker Tre Allison: four solo tackles with seven assists and a caused fumble
-Defensive lineman Breylon Johnson: six tackles, two assists and a sack for a loss of four yards.
LIONS TALES: John Tyler and Lufkin first played each other in football in 1914. The Lions hold a 39-30-3 advantage, including last year’s first postseason meeting, a 50-49 bi-district win by JT. … After Friday’s game, John Tyler travels to Rockwall to open District 11-6A play on Sept. 22. … Next week the Panthers meet Monterrey (Mexico) Prepa Tech in Lufkin.
