Tyler’s Greg Ward Jr., the former standout quarterback who switched to wide receiver, was signed to the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad on Sunday, the team announced.
Ward was one of the final cuts by the Eagles, but Philly quickly signed him to the practice squad.
He is a former star at John Tyler High School and the University of Houston.
In other NFL news, the Carolina Panthers placed Tylerites Fred Ross Jr. and Teddy Williams on injured reserve. Both are former John Tyler High School standouts.
Ross, a wide receiver who attended Mississippi State, suffered a high ankle sprain.
Williams, who suffered a shoulder injury in Thursday’s exhibition game against Pittsburgh, is a defensive back who attended UT San Antonio on a track scholarship.
Williams was more concerned about his flooded house in Houston and all the people in the city who have been displaced.
Williams said his wife and children left Houston for Charlotte the day before Hurricane Harvey made landfall - a trip that had been pre-planned. But then he found out at 3 a.m. that his house was sustaining damage.
“We actually found out our house had been hit pretty hard based off our alarm system,” Williams told the Charlotte Observer. “So (last) Friday night, when the hurricane hit, it knocked in our back doors and triggered our alarm. So they (the alarm company) called me at 3 in the morning, asking us if everything is OK. We didn’t know. So I checked our surveillance and I saw our doors flapping wide open. Water was just rushing in my house.”
Williams makes his offseason home in Houston. His in-laws and numerous friends still live in the city.
Also, former JT and SFA standout Justice Liggins was waived by the Indianapolis Colts.
Former Lion Jeremy Lane is a starting defensive back for the Seattle Seahawks, while Patrick Mahomes II, of Whitehouse, is the backup QB for the Kansas City Chiefs.
Josh Reynolds, a former Tyler Junior College Apache wide receiver who then attended Texas A&M, made the Los Angeles Rams team.
Palestine’s Adrian Peterson is with the New Orleans Saints.
Former Jacksonville High School and Louisiana Tech standout quarterback Luke McCown was released by the Dallas Cowboys.
McCown’s brother, Josh, will be the starting quarterback for the New York Jets. Josh McCown played at Jacksonville High School, SMU and Sam Houston State.
The Cowboys practice squad includes: Brian Brown, WR; Blake Jarwin, TE; Jameill Showers, S; Nate Theaker, G; Dan Skipper, OT; Lewis Neal, DT; Richard Ash, DT; Lance Lenoir, WR; Kadeem Edwards, OT; and Marquez White, CB.
