BULLARD - Brook Hill’s Jermiah McGowen scored three second-half touchdowns to pull away from Royal Imperial Collegiate (Ontario, Canada) 51-27 Saturday in the Tyler Ford/Brook Hill American Warrior Bowl at Herrington Stadium.

The Guard led 30-21 at halftime thanks to quarterback Hood Taylor rushing for two scores and throwing for another.

Taylor finished the game with 114 yards passing and a touchdown, while rushing 12 times for 130 yards and two scores. McGowen churned out 129 yards and three TDs on 23 carries.

Royal Imperial, which drove from Ontario to face Brook Hill, fell behind 16-0 early, but showed its moxie with three second-half touchdowns to keep things close.

Knights quarterback Jakub Horacek completed 19 of 34 pass attempts for 196 yards and two touchdowns (15, 24) in the loss. One of his scoring strikes went to receiver Riley Boersma, who led all players with nine catches for 102 yards.

Royal Imperial’s other passing TD was courtesy of Marcus Venicius in the final minutes of the game. Eduardo Nunes outfought two Brook Hill defenders for a 21-yard touchdown. Nunes also was on the receiving end of a Horacek scoring strike in the first half to finish with six catches for 60 yards.

Brook Hill started the game by driving 64 yards in six plays before Sam Nechi punched it in with a 26-yard TD run. McGowen ran in the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.

Any thoughts Royal Imperial had of emulating Brook Hill’s success on the ground were quickly forgotten on the Knights’ first possession. Two blitzing Brook Hill defenders nearly tackled Horacek before he could hand off to Josh Carpenter for a three-yard loss.

The Guard’s Seth Moss returned the Knights’ punt to the Brook Hill 40. This time it took 10 plays for the Guard to double their lead. Taylor connected with Grayson Priestner for a 16-yard score, followed by a two-point conversion run by Taylor to make it 16-0 with 6:28 to play in the first quarter.

Royal Imperial began to find success through the air with Horacek connecting with Boersma on fourth-and-3 for a 7-yard touchdown.

The Knights made it 16-14 in the second quarter with Horacek finding Nunes for a 20-yard touchdown.

Taylor wouldn’t let the Guard panic, driving his team down the field before crashing in for a 13-yard touchdown.

Brook Hill bent a little bit in the second half, but McGowen’s three touchdowns made sure the Guard ended the night with a victory.
