John Tyler, Lee, Arp standouts lead the 2017 Preseason Football Dream Team

The Everly Brothers made “All I Have to Do is Dream” a popular song in the late 1950s.

While they were not thinking about football, what coach or fan wouldn’t want the players on the 10th annual East Texas Preseason Football Dream Team on their squad?

A state championship would surely be on the charts in December.

We all can dream.

The team, selected by the sports staffs of the Tyler Morning Telegraph and ETFi nalScore.com, Longview News-Journal, Marshall News Messenger, Texarkana Gazette, Nacogdoches Daily Sentinel and Lufkin Daily News, consists of 32 players from the combined coverage areas of those newspapers - an area west to Trinidad, east to Waskom, north to Texarkana and south to Lufkin.

For the first time in four years, a quarterback and defensive lineman are not our preseason Players of the Year. This year the players are a running back and a safety.

Carthage running back Keaontay Ingram joins previous POY selections Tyrik Rollison of Sulphur Springs in 2008, Traylon Shead of Cayuga in 2009, Trey Metoyer of Whitehouse in 2010, Del Barnes of Henderson in 2011, Greg Ward Jr. of John Tyler in 2012, Patrick Mahomes II of Whitehouse in 2013, Larry Pryor of Sulphur Springs in 2014, Zach Hall of Robert E. Lee in 2015 and Jeremiah Crawford in 2016.

Ingram, a University of Texas commit, rushed for 2,244 yards and 32 touchdowns on 325 carries in helping Carthage to the Class 4A Division I state championship.

Defensively, Arp safety DeMarvion Overshown is now part of a fraternity that includes defensive POY honorees Jamarkus McFarland of Lufkin in 2008, John Tyler’s Ashton Dorsey in 2009, Daingerfield’s Steve Edmond in 2010, Van’s Dalton Santos in 2011, Longview’s DeMarkus Lathan in 2012, Gladewater’s Daylon Mack in 2014, Gilmer’s DeMarco Boyd in 2015 and Liberty-Eylau’s Lagaryonn Carson in 2016.

Overshown, who has committed to Texas, finished with 170 tackles, along with four sacks in helping Arp reach the Class 3A Division II state semifinals last season.

The 2017 campaign gets cranked up Monday.

Teams that did not hold spring drills may begin conditioning drills Monday, with the rest of the teams in the area getting underway Aug. 14.

Week 1 of the regular season begins the weekend of Aug. 31 through Sept. 2. The 11-week regular season concludes the weekend of Nov. 9 to 11.

State championship games are scheduled for Dec. 20 to 23 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
