The Tyler Junior College football and women’s soccer teams continued upward in the latest NJCAA polls, the organization announced on Tuesday from Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Danny Palmer’s football Apaches continued their climb, jumping from No. 12 to a tie for seventh this week, although TJC had an open date last week.
Corey Rose’s Apache Ladies soccer bolted to No. 1 after being ranked No. 3 in the preseason poll.
Steve Clements’ previously No. 1 ranked and defending national champion men’s soccer team suffered their first loss last week and dropped to No. 5.
The Apaches (2-0) began the season No. 16 and jumped to No. 12 after wins over Kilgore (22-8) and Texas A&T (56-0). The Apaches are tied with Holmes (Mississippi) this week at seventh.
Arizona Western (2-0) remained at No. 1, followed by East Mississippi (2-0), Trinity Valley (3-0), Iowa Western (3-0) and Northwest Mississippi (1-0).
Round out the top 10 are: 6, Mesa (Arizona), 2-0; 7, Holmes; 7, Tyler; 9, Lackawanna (Pennsylvania) (1-0) and Snow (Utah) (3-0).
Blinn College (2-0) is No. 14 with Northeastern Oklahoma A&M (1-1) tied for 15th with Independence (Kansas) (2-1).
TJC travels to Miami, Oklahoma on Saturday to meet NEO in a Southwest Junior College Football Conference game. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Last week, then No. 11 NEO traveled to Athens and lost to then No. 4 Trinity Valley, 27-14.
TVCC plays against Blinn on Saturday in Brenham. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Apache Ladies finished second in the nation last year and now have moved to No. 1 in the poll with a 6-0 record.
Tyler is followed by Eastern Florida State (2-0), Laramie County (Wyoming) (4-1), Monroe (New York) CC (3-1) and Navarro (6-0).
TJC scored a 2-1 win over No. 3 Laramie on Sunday in Tyler. Scoring goals for the Apache Ladies were Itzayanna Sanchez-Garcia and Lina Gomez. Claire Ramet had an assist.
The Apache Ladies open Region XIV play on Wednesday against Angelina College in Lufkin. The match has a 7 p.m. start. Angelina is 3-3 overall and 1-1 in league play.
The Apaches, after falling to Coastal Bend 3-1 on Friday, bounced back for a 1-0 win over Laredo on Saturday.
TJC is 4-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
Monroe (New York) College (5-0) is now No. 1, followed by Daytona State (Florida) (3-0), Yavapi (Arizona) (6-0-1), Eastern Florida State (3-1) and Tyler.
The Apaches have back-to-back home games at Pat Harley Field on Friday (vs. Northeast Texas, 7 p.m.) and Saturday (vs. Paris, 7 p.m.).
The Apache Ladies play the same teams at 5 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. Saturday.
