CARTHAGE - K.J. Davis went over the 2,000-yard rushing mark for the season with a spectacular performance on Saturday, leading the San Augustine Wolves to a 58-27 win over the Carlisle Indians in a Class 2A Division I Region III semifinal at Bulldog Stadium.
Davis, who entered the game with 1,792 yards and 24 touchdowns on the ground, carried 27 times for 323 yards and five touchdowns as the Wolves improved to 13-0 on the season and advanced to next week’s regional finals against Centerville.
Davis also added a receiving touchdown from Gavin Murr, who completed 10 of 15 passes for 258 yards and also went over 2,000 yards in the air for the season.
Tristan Craig completed 14 of 22 passes for 233 yards and a touchdown, adding a pair of rushing TDs in the loss for Carlisle. Jay Price caught 11 passes for 209 yards and a touchdown as the Tribe ended the year with a 9-4 record.
The win by San Augustine avenged a third-round playoff loss to the Indians a year ago when Carlisle notched a 42-28 victory.
San Augustine took a 6-0 lead late in the first quarter on a 59-yard touchdown run by Davis, and Davis later raced 58 yards before capping a five-play, 75-yard drive with a 1-yard run for a 12-0 lead by the Wolves.
Craig’s 3-yard run and the PAT by Chris Mendez with 9:54 to play in the second quarter pulled Carlisle to within five points (12-7), but a 43-yard TD pass from Murr to Davis and a 22-yard scoring strike from Murr to Kris Wade gave San Augustine a 27-7 lead at halftime.
The Wolves extended the lead to 33-7 less than two minutes into the third quarter on a 1-yard TD run by Davis, but Carlisle stormed back to pull to make it a 33-21 contest on a 2-yard run by Luis Adame with 5:51 to play in the quarter and an 80-yard scoring connection from Craig to Price two minutes later.
The Wolves put things away with three quick scores, including scoring runs of 50 and 2 yards by Davis and a 98-yard touchdown pass from Murr to Quentyvian Borders. Davis’ short TD run was set up by an interception from Justin Jenkins.
Craig’s 2-yard touchdown run with 2:30 to play made it a 51-27 contest, but T.J. Thomas bolted 39 yards for a San Augustine touchdown with 2:02 remaining to make the final 58-27.
