Tyler Lee coach Ross Barber said his team took the floor Tuesday against North Mesquite “really upset” about its road loss last week against Rockwall.
The Lady Raiders went to work early and never were threatened in a 66-21 win at the REL Varsity Gymnasium. The win raises Lee’s record to 19-5 and its District 11-6A mark to 3-2 while North Mesquite drops to 8-13 and 0-5.
“We felt like we (did not get a fair shot) the other night in Rockwall and we came out with a chip on our shoulder. They played Lady Raider basketball and how we know how to play,” Barber said.
Nine of 10 players on the roster registered at least one assist in the victory, led by senior Ja’Kayla Bowie, who was held scoreless in the first half because of foul trouble, but made up for it in the third quarter with nine points and five assists.
“It’s hard when your Division I player has to go to the bench because of (two quick fouls in the opening minutes), but Ja’Kayla is a complete team player,” Barber said. “She did not hang her head; she started talking to her teammates and was coaching from the sideline. Then when she went back in the game, she did not pick up another foul the rest of the game.”
Alyssia Thorne led Robert E. Lee offensively with 16 points while adding four assists and four rebounds. Fellow sophomore Aaliyah Morgan delivered 15 points, three rebounds and three blocks.
North Mesquite’s Jay’lann Myles scored 11 points to lead the Lady Stallions, who grabbed a 2-0 lead off the opening tip-off on a layup by Myles. A’Sharia Williams was the lone Lady Raider without an assist, but she made up for it with two points and three rebounds. Hannah Haynes was the lone Lady Raider without a point, but she made up for it with three assists and two steals.
“The kids came off the bench tonight ready to play, and I thought that was huge for us to get this big win going into JT on Friday,” Barber said.
The Lady Raiders responded by scoring the next 14 points. Thorne and Morgan scored six points apiece with Tyreesha Blaylock also chipping in two buckets as Lee led 18-3 entering the second quarter. With Bowie remaining on the bench with her two fouls in the second quarter, Morgan and Thorne continued where they picked off in the opening quarter, combining for 10 points to give Lee a 28-11 lead at halftime.
Bowie began the third quarter with consecutive buckets and kept up the pace as Lee used a 19-0 run to push even further ahead, 47-13. Bowie scored nine in the third and finished with 11 overall. Guards Halee Jackson and Tyreesha Blaylock each chipped in seven points apiece as REL coasted through the fourth quarter. Barber was able to rest his starting five for most of the final frame.
Next up for Lee is a clash with rival John Tyler. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Friday at Tyler Junior College’s Wagstaff Gymnasium. It is part of a doubleheader with the Lee vs. JT boys game to follow.
