Big Sandy wins Grand Saline tourney

GRAND SALINE - Caden Minter hit a 3-pointer to open overtime and Josiah Johnson returned from taking his SAT to score 28 points as Big Sandy downed Palestine Westwood 71-64 to capture the Grand Saline Basketball Tournament on Saturday.

The Wildcats (6-0) outscored the Panthers 17-10 in OT to take the title. Joshua Shipman added 22 points and seven rebounds, while Elijah Beard chipped in 13 points. Johnson also had seven assists and four rebounds.

In the semifinal game earlier in the day, Johnson had to skip the contest to take his SAT. Shipman led the way with 18 points and nine boards as the Wildcats defeated Scurry-Rosser 49-29. Beard had 10 points with Minter adding eight points and nine rebounds. Jordan Oswalt contributed eight boards.

Big Sandy will host its own tournament beginning Thursday. The Wildcats will play either Hughes Springs or Ore City at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
