Apaches down Blinn to stay unbeaten

BRENHAM - The No. 17 Apaches outscored Blinn by 19 points in the second half en route to an 84-77 victory in a Region XIV basketball game on Monday.

The victory kept Tyler Junior College unbeaten as the Apaches improve to 13-0 overall and 5-0 in conference play.

Blinn falls to 9-4 and 1-3.

The road win sets up a huge game on Wednesday as undefeated San Jacinto visits Wagstaff Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The TJC women will play Paris in the first game at 5:30 p.m.

Four Apaches scored in double figures, led by Kwinton Hinson’s 17 points. Jaqwan McCauley and TiAndre Jackson each chipped in 16 points with Eden Ewing adding 11.

All 10 Apaches scored, including guard Desmond Balentine (3 points) who had been held out of the first three games of 2017 with a foot injury.

The Buccaneers led 44-32 at halftime.

TJC picked up the offensive pace in the second and hit shots from behind the arc as the Apaches took their first lead of the half at 70-68 with 4:37 left.

Tyler went on a 19-1 run late in the second half that made it difficult for Blinn to recover.

Hinson hit four 3-pointers in the second half, while Jackson had four treys - two in the second half. Balentine had the other TJC 3 and it came in the first half.

McCauley, who was 14 for 14 at the free throw line in Friday’s win over Lee College, was 12 of 13 against the Bucs. For the game, TJC was 21 of 31 at the charity stripe.

Juwan Green led the Buccaneers in scoring from the point guard position with 22 points, while James Harrison scored 18 and LaKendric Hyson chipped in 12.

The Buccaneers hit 26 of 34 at the free throw line.

In other Region XIV games on Monday: Trinity Valley 88, Lee 80; San Jacinto 89, Kilgore 74; Panola 82, Angelina 77; Jacksonville 81, Navarro 65; and Paris 79, Lamar State-Port Arthur 76.

Also, the Blinn game with Kilgore that was postponed on Friday will now be played in Kilgore on Jan. 23.
