AUSTIN — A popular television show in the 1970s and early 80s was named “Eight is Enough.”
A popular basketball show in Van Zandt County could currently be called “Eight is Perfect.”
Meaning, the Martins Mill girls hope to complete their eight consecutive trip to the state tournament in the perfect way — as state champs.
This morning, the top-ranked Lady Mustangs (32-5) meet Snook (24-11) in the Class 1A Division I semifinals at 10 a.m. from the University of Texas’ Frank Erwin Center. The winner will advance to play either No. 17 Dallas Triple A Academy (28-5) or 11th-ranked Smyer (32-6) for the title Saturday morning.
“It’s special,” Martins Mill coach Doug Barncaste said after last weekend’s regional final. “I’ve said this before and I will say it again, in my opinion it doesn’t have anything to do with the coaching. It has to do with the players coming through the program. They learn the system, they work (hard) every single day and that’s what it takes to have consistency in any program.”
Martins Mill’s senior class would like nothing more than to finish their careers atop the UIL basketball world. That’s something that’s eluded them the previous three trips to the capital city, each of which featured a loss in the championship round.
The setbacks were to Sudan (last season) and Smyer (the previous two). The Lady Mustangs will be trying to capture their third title in the eight-year run, joining the 2005-06 and 2007-08 squads.
Martins Mill advanced to state with a 70-34 victory against Slocum in the Region III final last Saturday at Tyler Junior College’s Wagstaff Gymnasium. The Lady Mustangs have also secured playoff victories against Zavalla (53-46 in regional semifinals), Cayuga (50-25) and Lovelady (68-42).
Senior Haily Jenkins put together one of her best performances of the season against Slocum, finishing the game with 30 points and scoring 20 in the first half alone. The Lady Mustangs also got standout performances from sophomore Cheyenne Brown (20 points and 10 rebounds) and senior defensive specialist Taylor Munns, who held Slocum standout Valarie Larkin (20 ppg average) scoreless.
Snook, at state for the second consecutive season and fifth overall, survived 40-39 against Thorndale in the regional finals. The Lady Jays have also eliminated Port Aransas (43-35 in regional semifinals), Mason (46-42) and Harper (46-27).
The 3A and 4A semifinals are also set for today. The 3A games include Mexia (34-3) against Krum (29-6) at 1:30 p.m. and Kennedale (30-6) against Smithville (29-7) at 3 p.m., while the 4A games consist of Dallas Lincoln (35-4) against Aledo (30-7) at 7 p.m. and Georgetown (32-4) against Northside Brennan (30-8) at 8:30 p.m.
The remaining semifinals will be held Friday.
In 5A, Duncanville (40-0) faces League City Clear Springs (38-2) at 3 p.m. and Pflugerville (38-0) takes on Cibolo Steele (32-5) at 8:30 p.m.
In 2A, Brock (33-5) takes on Centerville (30-6) at 8:30 a.m. and Merkel (37-1) meets Poth (28-5) at 10 a.m.
And finally, in 1A Division II, Saltillo (31-5) squares off against Roscoe Highland at 1:30 p.m. and Whitharral (36-4) plays Leakey (24-7) at 7 p.m.
