Patriot women fall in ASC semis, 82-79 in OT
BROWNWOOD — The UT Tyler women’s basketball team’s historic season came to an end Saturday after a thrilling 82-79 overtime loss to No. 1 seed Louisiana College at the American Southwest Conference basketball tournament.
The Patriots’ Brittany King had a double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds. UT Tyler ended its season at 18-9, setting a program record for wins.
After being down by as many as 14 points in the second half, UT Tyler clawed back against the ASC East winner Louisiana College.
The Patriots trailed 52-38 with 15:07 remaining in the game after a Natosha Gottleib 3-pointer, but UT Tyler went on a 24-10 run, tying the game at 62-62 with 5:25 to play on a Taylor Murphy 3-pointer.
UT Tyler was able to take its first lead of the second half on a Danai Woods layup, making the score 65-64 with 3:26 remaining.
The Lady Wildcats would not go away, taking a 71-65 lead with 1:25 remaining on a pair of Skylar Chenevert free throws.
After two buckets by King, and defensive stops, the Patriots found themselves down two points with 31 seconds to play.
Woods then found herself at the free throw line and knocked down both charity tosses, tying the game at 71-71.
LC’s Kaci Willis missed a layup with six seconds remaining and the game went into overtime.
In the extra frame, Gottleib gave LC its final lead of the game, knocking down her second 3-pointer of the game, giving the Lady Wildcats the 74-71 lead.
After going down by four, Murphy knocked down another 3 with five seconds remaining, moving the Patriots within 80-79.
LC’s Shaina Howard connected on two free-throws, giving UT Tyler one last possession down by three points, 82-79.
Olivia Burns, one of two seniors on the squad, had the last attempt to tie the game, which missed the target.
She’Cara Humphrey chipped in 14 points to go with six rebounds for the Patriots, while Woods finished with 12 points and six rebounds.
